Directions:

.Prepare sample slice of same size and shape as plun-er disc and 1. 5 cm. thick. Use small miter box to prepare slice, holding loaf gently against side and end of miter box while slicing with a sawing motion.

.Place sample under plunger and adjust level of plunger with nut (B). With scale (C) reading 1. 5 cm. (sample thickness), the plunger disc should just rest on the surface of the sample and the reading on scale (D) should be zero.

.Start the motor by means of the toggle switch at left. When the sample has be@-@n compressed 2. 5 mm. (scale D), read the force on scale (J). (Note: This motor is very quiet and the drum turns slowly, so don't conclude hastily that nothing is happening!)

.'!'urn off motor and pull string to relieve tension on drum.

.To obtain force (in grams) required to compress the sample 2. 5 mm. , multipl@, the reading on scale (J) by 12. 1, the mechanical advantage for plunger position (1).

.1,7or very soft samples the plunger position may need to be changed. In this case, refer to the instruction book for balancing instructions and for the appropriate mechanical advantage.
