PURPOSE to Top

Certainly, the purpose does not suddenly appear as a defined, clearly stated purpose. It may start off with a general subject such as "cane versus beet sugar affects food quality. From this general beginning, specificity and clarity can be developed. For example, one might translate the general subject into a specific project by indicating:

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effect of substituting beet sugar or cane sugar in a typical 5% cornstarch dispersion system.

This gives some indication of the treatments - beet sugar or cane sugar - and the test materials. That is, a 5% cornstarch dispersion system. However, one still does not know the effect one is evaluating. So, the above could even be more explicity defined and clear stated to read

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effect on paste viscosity and gel strength of substituting beet sugar or cane sugar in a typical 5% cornstarch dispersion system.
This will give an indication of the scope of the experiment and a hint as to the type of methods which must be developed.
