NFM Proposal Guidelines The proposal at Oregon State University will formally consist of the following parts, unless otherwise indicated by the major professor. A. Title (<80 characters>) B. Specific Aims: State concisely and realistically what the research described in this proposal is intended to accomplish and/or what objectives/hypothesis (are) to be tested. Do not exceed one page. C. Significance: Briefly review the literature associated with your project, critically evaluating present knowledge and specifically identifying the gaps which the project is intended to fill. Do not exceed 3 pages. Provide the rationale why your project should be done. D. Methods: Discuss in detail the experimental design and the procedures to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project. Describe plans and tentative sequence of the investigation. Describe the methods to be used to collect each type of data, and if there are alternate methods available, justify your choice. Include the statistical analyses to be used for the data. Discuss the potential difficulties and limitations of the proposed procedure and how these will be identified and controlled. Point out any procedures, situations, or materials that may be hazardous to research personnel or subjects and the precautions to be exercised. If laboratory animals are to be used, complete the Research Protocol document and submit this form to Laboratory Animal Resources, ext. 7-2263. If human subjects are to be used, complete the document to be submitted to the University Institutional Review Board, including the Informed Consent. The directions for preparing this document can be obtained from the Research Office. E. Budget: Include all estimated costs. Indicate those which will be covered as part of a sponsored research project. F. Literature Cited: Use the citation form followed by a journal in your field to which the research article that might be published would be submitted. Be judicious in compiling a relevant and current bibliography. The proposal should be typed, double-spaced, with a font of 12, and margins (top, bottom, left, and right) of one inch with numbered pages. It should be a maximum of 10 pages, not including references.
