REPRINTS, COPIES Research Process

The success and ultimate publication with a research project stands on a foundation of a sound review of the literature in that area. This means a review of the many indexing and abstracting services. In addition to the Oregon State University Library, one needs to review the literature prior to the development of these electronic databases. For example, in the foods area, many of the causative affects of stresses is located in the literature prior to 1970. This has been partially computerized and is available. In addition to the indexed literature, one should investigate the World Wide Web. Be sure to utilized several web search databases. Searching the web may be done by using a variety of the key subject words and investigating institutions and authors that your other literature search has indicated do work in the area. When sites are located be sure to not only obtain the information but also to record the URL and date and time of location. One can further expand their search if they search a number of other libraries and their collections and databases. Actually, the most difficult aspect of a thoroughal literature search will be to pin point what is pertinent and what is worth keeping. Certainly, titles may give some indication of content. It is useful to keep in mind that the outcomes of research are not always congruent with expectations. In reviewing the literature it is useful to annotate those titles investigated. It may be particularly useful to briefly annotate and keyword the reference if this appears to be a professional life interest. The depth of annotation would be dependent on the pertinancy of the article. Irregardless of the citation, reference, source or address, it is critical at time of reading to be sure to collect total citation information. The method of citation will depend upon the area of your work. Generally, it is selected on potential future publication interest. As you maintain your electronic citation and literature search, using the most probable method minimizes future mistakes and difficulty. The method of citation can generally be obtained by looking at a journals procedures for manuscript submission of a specific journal. In a proposal, a literature review will expand this sentence by giving evidence of the shift and up-to-date information on what we do know. The literature review will mark the context for the problem statement and identify the gap in knowledge that the research will try to fill. It also connects you with other researchers in the field--an important step as no problem occurs in isolation. Literature Search For Food Related Subjects Certainly, there is considerable overlap in the areas listed below. A computerized database search of AGRICOLA, CHEM ABSTRACTS, MEDLINE, BUSINESS DATELINE. In reviewing the Valley Electronic Reference Center it is apparent a subject search can go well beyond the use of abstracting services and databases. Another potential gold mines would be the search of on-line journals. It would also be pertinent to search the USDA funded research. Particularly, one might focus the search on the CRIS database. Sometimes it is possible to get an idea of how popular a topic by looking at other research papers which have been produced. However, this is only a method of exploration and never should even "border or hint" at plagarism.
