A problem in the assay of phenolic compounds in tissue may be that these compounds are absorbed onto cell walls, thus reducing their extractability. Once extracted, they can be measured by ultraviolet spectroscopy, nephelometry, and colorimetry. None of these methods are completely satisfactory, according to Schanderl (1970). Fluorimetry may be employed to analyze samples for dopamine (Carlsson and Waldeck, 1958).
