The food habits of the Rastafarians, a Jamaica religion political cult, are reviewed. Rastafarians are basically vegetarians; they exclude meat and meat products from their diet. Freshly harvested vegetables or freshly caught fish are preferred to those products which are purchased from regular commercial outlets. Coconut milk is substituted for cow's milk. Dried fruits such as raisins, prunes, and nuts may be regular features of the Rastafarian diet. There are many positive aspects of these food habits; however, the diet may cause undernutrition. Dietitians must understand and respect these food customs while assisting Rastafarians to choose balanced diets.

Abstract: As part of a comprehensive study on coping with seasonal food insecurity, a food ethnographic study of the Otammari in the Atacora province of north-western Benin was carried out, comprising elements of the food system such as supply, preservation, storage, preparation, distribution and consumption. Cultural norms and values concerning food (food habits) are described and compared with other studies on this population, dating from the 1950s. Knowledge of the food system of a population provides essential information for a better understanding of the nature of nutritional problems. In this case it has led to understanding of the importance of early crops, especially fonio (hungry rice), and the economic and nutritional role of tree crops such as shea nuts and locust beans for populations coping with seasonal food insecurity. Therefore it is argued that nutrition research or interventions should be preceded by a food ethnography of the population concerned. This paper develops a systematic approach for food ethnographic studies, comprising both anthropological and nutritional methodologies.

Abstract: Extract: The purposes of this study were to: (1) study thedietary habits and nutrition knowledge of college students enrolled at San Diego State University, (2)determine the percentage of vegetarians in the population group studied, and (3) compare the dietary habits and nutrition knowledge of the nonvegetarians with vegetarians. Results from this study indicate a need for nutrition education for this age group. The students, both vegetarians and nonvegetarians, were found to have many misconceptions about nutrition.
