Abstract: A brief article reviews and contrasts food habits and practices of prehispanic Mexico, dating as far back as 10,000-5,000 BC, with current Mexican food practices. Ethnographic studies indicate the consumption of various indigenous plants and spices, while little in the way of native fruits (except the tomato and the avocado) were available. Traditional Mexican dishes that may have had their roots in prehispanic Mexico are discussed.

Summary From the first millennium B.C. through the 9th-century A.D. Classic Maya collapse, nonurban populations grew exponentially, doubling every 408 years, in the twin-lake (Yaxha-Sacnab) basin that contained the Classic urban center of Yaxha. Pollen data show that forests were essentially cleared by Early Classic time. Sharply accelerated slopewash and colluviation, amplified in the Yaxha subbasin by urban construction, transferred nutrients plus calcareous, silty clay to both lakes. Except for the urban silt, colluvium appearing as lake sediments has a mean total phosphorus concentration close to that of basic soils.

Abstract: A nutritional survey of 100 Brazilian migrant_ workers living in peri-urban slums and known as_ "Boia-Frias" (cold-meal eaters) was conducted. Findings_ demonstrated that inadequate dietary intake and_ nutritional deficiency are characteristic of the_ traditional diet of Boia-Frias. The rice and bean-based_ diet lacks fresh fruit, vegetables, or animal sources of_ protein. Empty-calorie foods (carbonated or alcoholic_ beverages) are routinely eaten. Weaning foods consist of_ starches. Pregnant and breast-feeding women also have_ poor diets. Major clinical deficiencies included low_ hematological values and low vitamin A. Dietary,_ biochemical and anthropometric investigations revealed_ indications of malnutrition and undernourishment in this_ population, due to lack of a varied, nutritionally_ well-balanced diet. Effective nutrition education is recommended.__
