The Canadian Home Economics Journal 31(2):92-95.: Abstract: The recent influx of Southeast Asian refugees into Canada is composed mostly of Vietnamese, with some Laotians and Cambodians. The native diet of these peoples, though distinctly different in some aspects, is similar to that of the Chinese, based on rice, tropical fruits, vegetables, fish and seasonings. Changes in food habits naturally occur with the new lifestyle in Canada, but information on the changes is still scanty. Trends seem to be toward white bread (a sign of affluence), apples (very rare in Indochina), increased protein consumption from meat, and increased use of milk products and soft drinks. Suggestions for home economists working with refugees emphasize the need to respect traditional food habits while encouraging a better and more varied diet and discouraging the formation of undesirable dietary habits. Special attention should be paid to infants, pregnant women and elderly people.

Canadian Home Economics Journal 44(3): 118-122.: Food consumption surveys in aboriginal communities present_ special challenges to researchers. This paper reports_ the approaches taken in response to the challenges_ encountered in a dietary survey in three northern_ Manitoba Cree communities. Discussion focuses on_ community involvement, understanding local customs and_ food habits, working with local interviewers, logistical_ issues, and aspects of research design. By sharing their_ collective knowledge, a team of local interviewers,_ health practitioners, and researchers were able to find_ practical solutions to the challenges encountered in the_ design and implementation of a dietary survey. While_ solutions found in one community may not be appropriate_ elsewhere, it is hoped that sharing this information_ will help others, including aboriginal communities, plan_ more effective dietary surveys._

Five Afro-Caribbean_ ethnic groups have been identified in the United Kingdom_ (the West Indians,' Colonial Settlers,' Civil Rights Blacks,' Black Nationalists,' and Pan-Africanists')._ Each group possesses individual ethnic and cultural_ factors which influence traditional food habits. Herbs and spices are added to most foods and beverages; hot_ sauces, hot peppers, and other condiments also are_ commonly used. The basics of the diet are cereals and_ starchy vegetables. Tropical fruits are eaten_ intermittently but not as part of the meal pattern._ Herbal teas are important for treating illnesses._ Traditional foods (pulses, cassava, dasheen, coconuts) are in demand and are imported because they are not_ indigenous to Britain. Foods important to the_ Rastafarian system of beliefs also are described.

Dodd Mead, New York, pp. 559.: Summary Little Salt Spring in southwest Florida, consisting of a shallow, water-filled basin above a deep, vertical underwater cavern, was a freshwater cenote in the peninsula's drier past. It collected and preserved perishable organic artifacts and other evidence of paleo-Indian and Archaic Indian origiin ranging in age from 12,000 to 9,000 and from 6,800 to 5,200 years ago. An Archaic Period cemetery containing an estimated 1000 burials occupies an adjoining muck-filled slough and presently drowned portions of the basin of the spring. Artifacts and the nature of interment suggest a cultural link between the Archaic people and the much later Glades Tradition of southern Florida.
