Cereals and Cereal Products Trend to Top

What is the status of cereals and grains? A review of the Wall Street Journal in 1997, indicate that it is becoming increasingly competitive and hard to "make a dollar". The news constantly discusses, new product releases, company mergers, lost crops, etc. All of these function to make an interesting market place.

In a review by Grider (1996), he indicated that there are three major categories in the cereal breakfast foods industry:

  • ready-to-serve breakfast foods (except instant cereals)
  • other cereal breakfast foods that include infant cereals, instant hot cereals, and other cereals requiring cooking before serving
  • other breakfast foods
  • As shown in the data below, a total of 9.8 billion of cereal breakfast foods within these catagories were shipped in 1992.
