What is the status of cereals and grains? A review of the Wall Street Journal in 1997, indicate that it is becoming increasingly competitive and hard to "make a dollar". The news constantly discusses, new product releases, company mergers, lost crops, etc. All of these function to make an interesting market place.
In a review by Grider (1996), he indicated that there are three major categories in the cereal breakfast foods industry:
ready-to-serve breakfast foods (except instant cereals)
other cereal breakfast foods that include infant cereals, instant hot cereals, and other cereals requiring cooking before serving
other breakfast foods
As shown in the data below, a total of 9.8 billion of cereal breakfast foods within these catagories were shipped in 1992.
