| REPRINTS, COPIES |
Recipes are developed for many reasons. A well-developed recipe must meet a number of needs, some of which overlap. These needs are: One important reason is to promote existing products. Quite a number of years ago the extension agents in Kansas learned the power of this when they developed a cheap little recipe for the beef council for the very cheap unusable product, tough flank steak. Through the Homemakers Groups with extension they published and promoted a recipe for stuffed flank steak. What was a cheap little used piece of meat suddenly reached the price of filet mignon due to the increased demand.
The recipes on the left indicate Campbell Soups promotion of their products through the use of recipes on a can. The use of a recipe such as "Mac 'N' Beef" and/or "Campbells' One Dish Chicken and Rice Bake" gives a variation to the soups. This expands their use beyond Mushroom Soup or Tomato Soup. Quaker Oats found the power of the recipe on their boxes of old-fashioned and quick-cooking quaker oats. After having placed it on the box for years they decided that it was no longer pertinent and so removed it. They were inundated with requests for the recipe for the oatmeal cookies. That is why it is found back on the box. Wheat chex, the cereal, has expanded their product from the basic wheat chex by coming up with the snack food - TV MIX. In fact, it has brought about a spin off series of products. When one launches a new product, recipes and menu items often are used to excite the consumer to its use. Doesn't Turkey Broccoli Casserole sound better than Creamed Green Turkey. The recipe can be misleading.
