If any leavening occurs at all it may be steam according to some definitions; however, unleavened according to this webber means that steam leavening does not occur. For example, a pound cake would be considered unleavened as it has no yeast or chemical leavening; whereas, considerable steam leavening occurs if the butter is properly aerated.
