NAKATSUGI

is a class of wooden containers used to hold powder for thin tea. They are thought to have originally functioned as containers for chaire of Chinese origin. Black lacquer (shin nuri) nakatsugi are used for display only. Mulberry nakatsugi are used for the Wakiindemae. Others maybe used for ordinary thin tea preparations.
