ICHIGO ICHIE

Modified from Anderson, Jennifer Lea. 1991. An introduction to the Japanese way of tea. State University of New York, Albany.
is best translated "once chance in a lifetime," a phrase coined by Ii Naosuke (1815-1860) and frequently used in Tea. It has the sense that there is but one chance and one time for each tea gathering. The opportunity should be used to the fullest since it cannot be repeated.
