The recent influx of Southeast Asian refugees into Canada is composed mostly of Vietnamese, with some Laotians and Cambodians. The native diet of these peoples, though distinctly different in some aspects, is similar to that of the Chinese, based on rice, tropical fruits, vegetables, fish and seasonings. Changes in food habits naturally occur with the new lifestyle in Canada, but information on the changes is still scanty. Trends seem to be toward white bread (a sign of affluence), apples (very rare in Indochina), increased protein consumption from meat, and increased use of milk products and soft drinks. Suggestions for home economists working with refugees emphasize the need to respect traditional food habits while encouraging a better and more varied diet and discouraging the formation of undesirable dietary habits. Special attention should be paid to infants, pregnant women and elderly people.
